Editing our Founding Fathers

A mind always employed is always happy. This is the true secret, the grand recipe, for felicity.
- Thomas Jefferson, 1743-1826, 3rd President of the United States

Felicity means happiness. It or the variants Felicita and Felicitas can also refer to:

Felicity is a Golden Globe-winning American primetime television drama produced by Touchstone Television and Imagine Television for The WB network.

Felicity: An American Girl Adventure is a 2005 television film. Ten-year-old Felicity Merriman is growing up in Williamsburg, Virginia, just before the American Revolution. Felicity longs to be free.

I didn't realize Thomas Jefferson watched so much TV . . . . you'd think he'd have better things to do.

Felicity? Why did he pick THAT word and not just SAY happiness. Our founding fathers liked big words.

Maybe it was the way it looked when he wrote with the quill pen.

Maybe it's because Felicity has fewer letters than Happiness does and he was feeling lazy that day.

Maybe it's because he had a word of the day calendar.

All I know is I would have said happiness. In fact . . . we need to fix that quote. I would have said:

A cat served sardines is always happy. This is the true secret, the grand recipe, for happiness.
-Dougal, b 2001, painter, author, poet and all round entertainer--Renaissance Cat and sardine connoisseur
